The Tax Trap Waiting for Surviving Spouses

When one spouse dies, the survivor keeps the income but loses half the deduction — and files single. The tax hit is large, and preventable. Roth Conversion Reset by Craig Wear, CFP®, shows IRA Millionaires how to solve it while rates are low. Free, delivered instantly.

✍️ From the Editor

Hey Berliners!

Three things finish today. The circus comes down on Tempelhofer Feld after twelve days. Sound in the Garden plays its last set in the Neue Nationalgalerie’s sculpture garden. And Young Euro Classic closes at the Konzerthaus after seventeen nights of youth orchestras.

Then the week empties out until Saturday, when it all arrives at once. A brand-new festival brings 25,000 people onto the Tempelhof airfield. A former crematorium in Wedding throws open its whole site, free. An orchestra plays to fireworks over a lake in Neukölln. Both football clubs are out, one of them in the cup. And it is the last day of the school holidays.

You will have to choose. Sorry.

One thing that can’t wait: the Long Night of Museums is on the 29th, but the cheap ticket disappears tonight. €15 today, €23 tomorrow.

Apple raised MacBook and iPad prices twice this year, in March and June, blaming the memory shortage. This week's discounts come off those higher numbers.

🎫 Long Night of Museums: the cheap ticket ends today
75 museums, around 750 events, one ticket, Saturday, 29 August: €15 (€12 reduced) until tonight and €23 (€17) from tomorrow. This year's theme is Crime in Berlin.

🎶 The Week’s Lead

🎪 TFELD Sat 22 Aug · 13:00–22:00 · from €69 ⭐

A brand-new festival, and not a small one: up to 25,000 people on the old Tempelhof airfield for a day and a night, under the motto "Das ist Berlin".

Four stages, split between hip-hop and electronic. Paul Kalkbrenner live, Pashanim, Ellen Allien, Marlon Hoffstadt, AK Ausserkontrolle, Southstar, and a secret female headliner. Around the music: a funfair, a basketball court, flea market stalls, and oversized replicas of Berlin landmarks.

The real draw is in Hangar 6. Watergate, closed at the end of 2024 after 22 years on the Spree, is being rebuilt for one night, replica and all, with Cinthie, MALUGI, and Spacer Woman until six in the morning. Separate add-on ticket, 18+.

Two things worth knowing. Tickets rise by €1 every evening at 22:08, so buying early genuinely costs less. And there is no parking anywhere near the airfield.

📍 Entry via Tempelhofer Damm, U6 Paradestraße / S+U Tempelhof · 16+ with ID

🌤️ Weather

The heat breaks today. This morning it's 24°C with early showers, and the rest of the week sits in the low twenties—the coolest stretch since June.

Mon 17 · 21°C / 12°C · dry
Tue 18 · 20°C / 15°C · afternoon showers, the week's wettest
Wed 19 · 22°C / 14°C · showers early, clearing
Thu 20 · 24°C / 14°C · dry
Fri 21 · 22°C / 13°C · showers possible
Sat 22 · 23°C / 13°C · dry, which is what Saturday needs

📰 City News

🚇 Both closures lift this week
The northern S-Bahn between Bornholmer Straße and Schönholz reopens Monday, 17 August; S1, S25, and S85 are back to normal. The U5 between Hellersdorf and Friedrichsfelde reopens Thursday, 20 August. First clear run in six weeks.

🏫 The holidays end Saturday
School's back on Monday the 24th. Hold onto the Super-Ferien-Pass (€9 for under-18s), and it works through every school holiday to Easter 2027, though the daily free swim gets less useful from Monday.

🚫 Zug der Liebe won't march
The techno parade set for 29 August is off. The organisers said the security measures now required contradict what a fear-free street protest is for, and 70% of their trucks fell through. Their remaining floats join a rally to save the RAW-Gelände that day instead

🍽️ Restaurant Pick

🥘 Bar Levain — Schöneberg

Levain is the sourdough starter that makes bread rise, which tells you the ambition: a Parisian-feeling corner bar rather than a restaurant.

It's taken the Vorbergstraße site that held Björn Swanson's Faelt, and it's the first place of their own for Maximilian Hühnergart – Facil, Tulus Lotrek, and Barra – and Anna Hernández Götz, who ran wine and front of house at Tulus Lotrek.

Twenty-two seats, a short seasonal menu, mains from €23, and natural wine with equally considered non-alcoholic pairings.

Weekdays only: Mon–Fri, 17:00–23:00. Book ahead — twenty-two seats go fast.

📍 Vorbergstr. 10a — U7 Kleistpark

🛍️ Shopping Pick

🎒 Modulor — Moritzplatz

School starts a week tomorrow, and Modulor is where you clear the whole materials list in one trip: three thousand square metres of paper, pens, board, tools and art supplies in the Aufbau Haus. Planners, Leuchtturm notebooks, fountain pens, and the technical drawing kit no supermarket carries.

Mon–Sat, 10:00–20:00. Go in the week; it's calmer, and the Aufbau Haus has a café and a bookshop for afterwards.
